David's 9th Birthday

David turned 9 on Wednesday, Feb. 2nd. That night we had his favorite meal for dinner (pretty much the only thing he eats,) chocolate chip pancakes and bacon. That was it for the festivities that night because he had a basketball game. They won the game, their first win of the season. Then on Friday we went down to Chuck E. Cheese where all the kids had a lot of fun playing lots of games and getting a lot of tickets to win prizes. To finish it off, we came home to open up presents and eat cake and ice cream. David got Indian Jones 2 for Wii, a 4th Wii remote, a 2nd Wii nunchuck, a cup-stacking set, and a couple of Star Wars books.



David spends as much time as we'll let him playing video games, mostly Wii since we got that for Christmas. His other love in life is Legos. He enjoys going to Cub Scouts and should be getting his Wolf this month and moving up into another group. He is also still taking piano lessons, though it's not always easy to get him to spend a lot of time practicing. He's been slowly reading the Harry Potter series. It usually takes him a while because he usually puts in the minimum required reading time each day, but he enjoys the books and the movies. He likes to ask questions to try to figure out the why and how for everything.

The challenge we are having with David right now is he is not a particularly responsible student. He brought home his report card a couple of weeks ago and he had a couple of 1's in Writing, (they receive scores from 3-1, a 1 is equivalent to a D/F.) The reasons for the grades were because he had not turned in several big writing assignments! But, luckily he has a great teacher who focuses on the positive and she has initiated a plan to assist him. Hopefully now that I'm totally aware of the situation we'll be able to correct it quickly. He also seems to have problems with retention. I'm not sure if he really has a poor memory or if he just doesn't put in the effort to remember something if he isn't interested in it. I set a rule in place starting today that no video games can be played during the week in order to hopefully get his focus off video games and on to other things. He's a smart kid, but he's not always real organized or responsible and it's hard to get him to put any time or effort into things he doesn't really care about.
