The best of intentions....

So, yesterday afternoon was an absolutely beautiful day, sunny and high 60's, something you don't find here much this time of year. So I had the lovely idea of going to this Pumpkin Patch I had heard fun things about for a fun little outing. So we picked Jonathan up from work (he has a deadline Monday, so he's working lots this weekend,) and headed out there. You know, spend an hour or two there, have some fun, and be home in time for dinner, haircuts for the boys, baths, bed and then painting the dining room. We had a very enjoyable time there, we saw some animals in the barn, took a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch where each child chose one small pumpkin, climbed and jumped around on barrels of hay, and rode a cow train pulled by a tractor.

Now here is the reason, that despite the fun we had, in the words of Emily, "We should have just stayed home." Given it being a beautiful Saturday afternoon, every single person in the Portland metro area, each in their individual cars, decided to also go to said pumpkin patch. This pumpkin patch is an island in the middle of the river, with one two lane bridge being the only way on and off said island. It took us 2 hours and 15 minutes to get home. (Said pumpkin patch is less than 17 miles away from our house.) Mercifully the children fell asleep the last third or so of the "drive." So at 8:45 we were eating cereal and chicken nuggets before heading to bed and no haircuts, baths, or painting was accomplished. Given we spend more time getting home than we at the pumpkin patch, we have vowed to never go there again on a Saturday afternoon.

These are the events that will stay in your memories for years to come and make family life special. It is so neat to see your family growing and the wonderful job you are doing as parents. Thanks for sharing - it brings us great joy! Dad

You should have gone on Friday instead. We did and it was fabulous weather without the traffic and craziness. The kids were out of school too.
By the way I got here from the Dickinson's blog. Just wanted to say HI. See you at the next BYU game.
